For better or worse, Zip was being sold pretty much everywhere, even Wal-Mart, so someone who bought a Performa would be able to get Zip media for it even if they lived very far away from a major metro area. Therefore, MICROTEK is proud to lay claim to a number of industry firsts since the world's first 300-dpi black-and-white sheet-fed scanner in 1985. In a very real way that would mean selling to people who didn't want to deal with catalogs or wouldn't have a store locally selling SyQuest or MO media. In the '90s, Apple was trying very hard to sell Macs to people outside of what people tend to think of as the traditional Mac strongholds, education, graphics, artists, and the like. Zip was a reasonably good choice on Apple's part, mostly due to the above-mentioned Capitalism Games. In fact, Zip drives were responsible for delays in shipping Macs at least a couple different times over the years. In reality it wasn't really integrated or baked in in any special way other than having been a first-party configuration option.

At some point, Apple added the Iomega Zip drivers to its own OS install media – probably both to support their own Macs that had Zip pre-integrated, and due to the popularity of the drives as add-ons.

Apple had several configurations available with Zip drives from 1997 to 2002 or 2003 and Iomega also made add-on kits for Macs explicitly for most of this time. As described above, Iomega did a lot to encourage computer OEMs to include Zip drives in their systems and Apple was part of this. Zip was integrated to the platform so it's better or easier!

In 1998, Iomega released a 250 megabyte version of the format. Zip gained popularity because of it's low cost. It used flexible magnetic media similar to a floppy drive, but the read/write head was inserted into the front of the media instead of opening on the top, making the media thicker. These systems were all fairly costly and as the '90s wore on, computer vendors were working on making computer hardware and software less expensive for consumers. Prior to Zip, Iomega was shipping 5.25-inch Bernoulli drives and cartridges, along with cartridges for a couple different SyQuest drives, margneto optical cartriges, and Ditto 1) tapes. In the '90s, Iomega developed a new lower-cost removable media format to replace and augment their existing products.
